encyclopedia of adoption
National organization for singles interested in adopting or who have adopted children.
The Washington, D.C.-based organization was formed in 1973 by the current chairman, Hope Marindin. It seeks to provide information and assistance to singles, to gather and disseminate legislation and research findings on single parent adoption and to promote the adoption of children despite their race, creed, national origin or any handicapping conditions.
Membership varies from year to year but averages about 350 members. A 1990 survey of its members revealed that nearly half were in the "helping" professions, such as teaching, social work, nursing. Businesspeople represented 37% of the total members. Other members included writers, engineers, musicians, artists and other professions.
A very large number of the members are well educated: the survey revealed that 86% of the prospective single adoptive parents were college graduates, and 14% had earned doctorate degrees.
Most of the members were in their thirties with 10% under age 30 and 23% older than 39.
Members receive a source list and updates of information on agencies placing children with single parents, including estimates of the waiting time and costs involved. The committee publishes the Handbook for Single Adoptive Parents, which covers the how-to aspects of adopting as well as information on bringing up the adopted child and includes single parent adoption accounts. The organizationalso provides information on local single adoptive parent support groups and books to read and upon request will provide names of single adoptive parents in the requester's area. (See also SINGLE ADOPTIVE PARENTS.)
