encyclopedia of adoption
A national support organization founded in 1974 by Barbara Eck Menning for people experiencing the crisis of infertility. Based in Somerville, Massachusetts, the organization has over 15,000 members in chapters throughout the United States.
RESOLVE offers medical information and referrals, counseling, journal articles on infertility and backing for reforms in such areas as medical insurance coverage for the expenses of infertility treatment and adoption. The organization also provides mental health experts with infertility information to help with treatment of anxiety that may result from infertility.
Local chapters provide local telephone contacts, support and information and referrals to physicians, adoption agencies and other resources.
The majority of RESOLVE members are infertile couples, but membership also includes social workers, physicians and other professionals who help couples with problems of infertility.
According to RESOLVE brochures, infertility is linked to a medical problem in 90% of the cases, and feelings of stress are caused by infertility and are not the cause of infertility. (Many couples have been urged to "just relax" by well-meaning friends, placing the blame on their anxiety-which could lead to more anxiety.)
The organization publishes a newsletter five times a year. The national organization holds one annual meeting, and local chapters hold periodic meetings. RESOLVE leaders hope to expand membership and create a strong public awareness.
