India

One of the countries from which children are adopted by Americans as well as by people from other countries. Single adoptive parents also adopt from India because they are not restricted from adopting, as is often the case elsewhere. In 1998, 478 children were adopted from India by Americans, according to statistics provided by the U.S. State Department.

It should be noted that although India does not prohibit singles from adopting as of this writing, the international adoption scene is very changeable. Prospective adoptive parents are advised to gain current information from agencies and support groups. In addition, the INTERNATIONAL CONCERNS FOR CHILDREN offers valuable and updated information. And, of course, the materials available from the U.S. Department of State should always be referred to for the most up-to-date information. (See also INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION.)
